If you are using a GPS device, I recommend putting the coordinates listed in these directions into your receiver before you start your drive. Coordinates are in degrees, minutes, seconds, WGS 84.

FROM MANAGUA:

The Pescado Negro Home (12* 21’ 52” N / 087* 01’ 35” W) located in Las Penitas is approximately 120 km Northwest of Managua. From the Managua Airport, head West on Carretera Norte (North Highway). As you reach the West edge of Managua, you will climb a small hill. From the top of the small hill, go approximately 1.2 kilometers to a major intersection, and veer to the right (now heading North) towards the towns of Brasiles, Mateare, Nagarote and La Paz. Stay on the highway as you go through all of these small towns.

Past the town of La Paz, and around 70 Kilometers into your trip is a “T” intersection (12* 16’ 04” N / 086* 44’ 10”W). Turn right and head North towards the town of Leon. Leon can be a little tricky because there are many one-way streets, and the street signs are not on poles, but are on the sides of buildings and houses, not too far from where a street sign would normally be. I had better luck looking behind me to find what street I had just past. Once you know a few landmarks and the street that you are on, use the maps and you’ll do just fine.

As you drive up to the town of Leon, there will be an Esso Gas Station (12* 25’ 26” N / 086* 52’ 33” W) on your left. Make a right turn, and head north over a small bridge and up the hill to the giant Cathedral. Go one block past the Cathedral, then turn left onto 1 Calle Norte (1st Street North), and head west for 9 blocks. Make a left onto Avenida 9 Poniente (9th Avenue west) and go 1 block south to Ruben Dario Central, and make a right, heading west. You have successfully managed your way through Nicaragua’s second largest city! Stay on this main paved road, for approximately 20 Km until you see the “Y” intersection (12* 22’ 22”N / 087* 02’ 06”W), then veer to the left (now dirt road) into Las Penitas. From this Y intersection, go approximately 1.5 Km down the road and make a left turn at Hotel Dulce Refugio, and the Pescado Negro Home is 200 meters ahead on your right, look for the big blue gate. Park beside the gate, and Fransisco will meet you and help you with your things.

RETURNING TO MANAGUA:

The return route is the same as the route out to Las Penitas, with the exception of the town of Leon, due to the one-way streets. As you head East back into Leon and if you are going back to Managua, continue East onto Central Ruben Dario Street, until you reach Avenida 2 Poniente. The giant Cathedral should be 2 blocks in front of you. Turn right, and head south for 3 blocks until you reach 3 Calle Sur (3rd Street South). Turn left and go 2 blocks to Avenida Central and turn right, heading south. After a few blocks, there will be a church in the middle of the street; stay to the right as you go around the church, and continue South on Avenida Central. This road will end when you see the Guadalupe Cemetery in front of you. Turn left, and you will see the Esso Gas station on your right, and this road becomes the Pan American Highway as you head south towards Managua.
